The cookery Day at Banbury was a great success and we enjoyed working with the students and meeting some of the school's Student Fairtrade Committee who are as keen as mustard.
The students served the cookies they had made to Age U.k. at Tea in the afternoon

The next Banbury Fairtrade Town Steering group meeting will be on Wednesday 8th September 2010 at Marlborough Road Methodist Church, Wesley Room at 7.30p.m.. We will welcome our new Chair Rob Anning at that meeting. All are welcome. Do come along we look forward to meeting you and hearing your ideas for promoting Fairtrade in banbury and surrounding district
Plenty of parking in the church carpark at the side of the building or on the road outside. The Wesley room is entered through the 2nd door in the carpark.

News about Banbury School
We are going into the school on15th July to do a cookery class using FT ingredients .The students and staff and probably some visitors from Age UK will sample the results--fun!

Fairtrade Fashion Show
at Banbury School 14th May 2010 at 6.30pm.
Very sadly this event has had to be cancelled . We hope however to return to Banbury School and work with them ,perhaps on another event and to help them to become a Fairtrade School which they say is their aim

RENEWED FAIRTRADE TOWN CERTIFICATE
This has been achieved with even more retail outlets offering even more Fairtrade products for sale and more businesses using Fairtrade products. The certificate will be presented to the Town Council at the Council meeting on 22nd April at the Town Hall at 6.30p.m. Do come along to celebrate this

The stall is open on Sundays after 9.30 service stocking a range of food stuffs.
The gift shop in church stocks some "gift type" items and a small range of foods.

Deddington Fair Traders (St Peter and St Paul)
Fair trade stall in the church on Farmers' Market mornings (4th Saturday each month, 9am-12pm) sells a range of foodstuffs. Also open on some Sundays after 10.30am service.

We are a group of local people who are committed to promoting the benefits of fair trade in Banbury and its surrounding area.

Our Aim
There are a number of key things we would like to do:

* inform people locally about fair trade
* encourage people to buy fair trade products
* encourage more local retailers to supply fair trade products
* persuade local organisations and businesses to switch to using fair trade products

Banbury achieved Fairtrade Town status in March 2006. This means that Banbury Town Council serves fairly traded coffee and tea at its meetings, offices and canteens. It promotes awareness of fair trade through its publicity channels. The town council is represented on the Banbury Fairtrade Town Steering Group.

What is fair trade?

Fair trade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. It enables these farmers and workers to improve their situation and have more control over their lives. There are a number of conditions that have to be met before a product can be considered fairly traded and they include:

a price that covers the cost of production
an additional premium for social development purposes, for example funding to support schooling
part payment in advance to help avoid small producers falling into debt
long term trade relations that allows proper planning and sustainable production practises
fair production conditions

How do I know if a product is fairly traded?
If you are buying food and drink, cotton products, roses or sports balls, look for the FAIRTRADE Mark, which is printed on products that have been certified by the Fairtrade Foundation. There are over 2,000 products that are available with this logo. Fairly traded handicrafts do not currently carry the FAIRTRADE Mark as the Fairtrade Labelling Organisation does not have certifying standards for them. To ensure that your handicrafts are fairly traded, buy from a reputable fair trade retailer, such as Traidcraft, Tearcraft or any member of the British Association of Fair Trade Shops.

Doesn’t fair trade adversely affect producers in our area?
The majority of products that carry the Fairtrade mark are tropical commodity food products such as coffee, tea, chocolate cocoa, bananas, sugar, orange juice, or items where these products are a key ingredient, and these are usually not grown in the UK!
